TOPIC: Robert Maxwell

Robert Maxwell 3 Years, 3 Months ago
Fascinating shows on Ghislaine Maxwell and her father; Robert Maxwell rang me several times when I was writing a page each week for the Sun; Maxwell was very complimentary, very flattering, offered me three times the money the Sun was paying me (as I remember about 300,000 a year - a lot of money in the 80s). I rejected his offer; I didn't trust or like him whereas I did like and trust Murdoch (still do).

About 15 years ago. I served a group of customers. Like a friendly pub landlord I got talking to them at the bar. They all worked for The Mirror, they certainty told some stories about Maxwell.

They all agreed he isn't missed there was a celebration when Maxwell snuffed it. He was a terrible boss.

4 out 6 customers were in limbo with their pensions pots.

I believed Maxwell faked his death and went on a private island.

But his body was found, identified , verified and buried in Jerusalem.

What remains uncertain is the cause of death.

Accident, suicide or something more sinister.

To their credit Murdoch outlets pay invoices on time without quibbling.

The more "quality" outlets are a nightmare.

Superb article.

www.mirrorpensioners.co.uk/news/maxwells-downfall/

Love him or hate Murdoch was the better media mogul out of the two. I dislike Murdoch for Sky TV despite he longer has much to do with it. It has always been a rip off. Especially to those who work in hospitality.

It's worse now since Comcast took over Sky and the content is even more unwatchable. I don't hardly know any one who has Sky TV or cable now. They get their broadband from one of the smaller companies. Its still BT who provides the broadband to these companies.

I saw it on iplayer it was very interesting, I never knew or met Maxwell and I don't think I wanted either. I can't believe he had 400 companines (each one a fake no doubt) and hardly made a profit. Like most rich folk they have very wealth themselves but everything is in assetts.

Macmillan publishers were known to publish naff or dated novels even then. If you went to an airport to get book in the 90's it was all mainly Penguin, Viking, Signet and maybe the odd Coronet.

Did the government help with the pensions to whose were affected ?

Everyone's wealth (those that have it) is in assetts, such as cash.

If you're bright enough to make money, you're bright enough to use loopholes as long as they are legal (avoid as opposed to evade) and make sure any costs arising (Prince Andrew) are taken care of by friends, companies, trusts or even crowd funding.

Spot on !

Everyone's wealth (those that have it) is in assetts, such as cash

It depends, I was once a millionaire but only paper due to some investments in nightclubs in Canada and Lativa. However when I sold my shares it was way less than million in both currencies.

The financial affairs of our Royal Family have been shrouded in mystery for years. Some of their assets (Balmoral etc.) were bought with public funds, yet are in private ownership.

And their payment of tax is erratic at best, as are the whole Royal purse and 'grace and favour' arrangements. Secrecy is ubiquitous and allowed and condoned by successive governments. And HM Treasury.

And I'm sure perfectly legal Barney - avoiding rather than evading, using expert advice.

International business requires currency hedging as a primary step. Cash is still king, but only when its value is protected and safe.

Being liquid and cash-rich allows entrepreneurs to pounce on good value opportunities, without having to talk to banks or sharks.

Tesla-man and PayPal-man (the same) is a good example. Musk has shown people just how business should be done.

Where were Ford, Mercedes or Rolls Royce, when electric power was the future?

Same with Branson.
