Back in 1979 Police were looking for a killer called The Yorkshire Ripper. A hoaxer (thought at the time to be genuine) sent the cop in charge a tape which police wanted to be heard by as many as possible. I announced we would release it on Blood Red Vinyl and hold the royalties for collection by the killer or the hoaxer. Mainly done for fun but also genuinely intended to assist police. I got a call from the cop threatening all kinds of action unless I withdrew it, which I did. “It would increase our workload”, he said. My first evidence that police don’t want to find the truth but just to get convictions, whether right or wrong.
