The reason it's so good is that both characters are sympathetic; without in any way defending what they did or attempting to make us feel sorry for them, they come across as flawed human beings (aren't we all?) which is rare in TV these days when only extremes are reflected.
I've always been a huge Marsan fan but one of the things I loved about this superb series was that they didn't do the obvious physical similarities (i.e. avoided Monica wearing stupid false teeth). They chose the best actor for the job and he - both of them - are utterly marvellous. The documentary last night was also impressive, showing just how ordinary both people were. I suspect we shall see TWO Best Awards in the Baftas.
