I felt the trouble with Prick Up Your Ears was that, despite Alan Bennett (national treasure) being involved, the humour was missing or misdirected.

I watched it on ITVX last night. I hadn't seen it for years probably a VHS rental. I still hadn't read the diaries.

I don't think Alan Bennett was looking for humour. What I have read about Joe Orton he only cared about Joe Orton. He has showed signs of a sociopath.

Halliwell was going to be committed so I wonder if Joe and showbiz friends drove him nuts or he was nuts? People can be cruel.

In Kenneth Williams Diaries he spoke about Halliwell in a positive light. KW adored both of them equally.
