Gorbachev 2 Years, 9 Months ago
I remember my one and only trip to Russia when I found the people really, really nice and wanted to return after learning to speak some basic Russian. I never managed to do it and it's too late now but Gorbachev struck me as a very good example of a lot I liked about the Russians.

I shook his hand once..at a Circus Tent in a Sydney Park (don't ask)

about 5'9 with those very Russian broad shoulders and huge hands.

firm handshake and a nod of his head..dirty look from 2 bodyguards and he was gone.

In a more general way he was clearly one of the great human beings - whether you consider it good or bad, like Thatcher and Reagan and Hitler and Churchill and Alexander the Great and Attila the Hun, he was a massive figure.

It was towering what he did and ensured decades of relative stability and peace following the end of the cold war.

Just a tragedy that Russia - for whatever reasons, I am no expert- wasn't ready or would not embrace and make work democratic capitalism with a social conscience.

Instead, a few bastards directed the wealth to themselves, and a barbarian occupies the Kremlin.

In the 90's, the sale of almost 80% of Russia's largest corporations brought unrivalled opportunities for corruption by officials and their cronies.

The privatisation program promoted and executed by Yeltsin created thousands of millionaires and billionaires, by unfairly relocating the nation's assets.

Of course. You can call the system or parties anything you want, but corrupt pigs will always end up in charge.
