Just watched this again for the first time since 1979 - it really is still a terrific film with all three leads sensational. The 7 year old kid is now 51!
I agree, it's a brilliant film. I especially liked the ice-cream scene! The 70s seems to have been a good decade for thoughtful and creative films. I've the impression there was a descent into chasing after popularity and box-office returns after that.

The ice cream scene is unintentionally funny. Dustin Hoffman finest moment for me was Midnight Cowboy a film I saw in a picture house.
