but I was one of the first victims of the False Allegations Industry to be used for other reasons. Publicist Max Clifford was approached by Kirk McIntyre in the year 2000 to get money from the media, claiming that he had been abused in the 1970s by several gay men. Max told him the story was worthless; none of the men was a celebrity. McIntyre went away and returned with my name. I'd never met him but couldn't prove that. But I was a celebrity (back then). Max had also (I suspect) been approached by someone about to lose their job when I became Global Chairman of the music company EMI, a job I had been offered. He told McIntyre to go down the Police route - make a formal complaint; I would be arrested (in 2000) and the publicity would certainly bring other False Accusers out of the woodwork.
This kind of thing had happened for years - especially in the gay world (often leading to blackmail and suicide). Max had used it mainly with footballers and was keen to extend the power and profits into broader life. It was only a few days after my arrest that the ages of consent were equalised at 16. Before that, gay sex had been illegal (until 1967), or only legal for the OVER 21s (until the 1990s).
Not knowing the reality (that police were not interested in truth; only in getting convictions) and long before False Accusers were considered honest automatically (why???), I was wrongly convicted in 2001. My appeal is still ongoing.
When Surrey Police tried again (hoping to improve their image after the Savile bad publicity) in 2015, they found, to their horror, that there were no credible accusers. They dredged up a few old ones, rejected in 2001, including McIntyre. After my acquittal, the Mail ran this piece - full of incorrect "facts". I was declared
Not Guilty of McIntyre's lies when several chunks of evidence emerged, showing he'd been in dozens of mental institutions in his life (and had never mentioned me amongst his "abusers" until after meeting Clifford in 2000). I was also declared Not Guilty of other charges and the remainder were thrown out and any retrial refused. The reporter knew this but chose to lie. Why? It was a better story.
Since my "debacle" of 2018 the False Allegations Industry has exploded (especially in America - always slightly behind the UK). Especially against "ordinary"people who may not have millions to be stolen by liars assisted by police and corrupt lawyers but can still provide liars with cash (the CICA really needs looking at). One falsely accused in prison had to sell his home to pay the liar, getting his family evicted and thrown onto the street. This is Great Britain today.
We MUST change this broken system.
