TOPIC: World cup anyone?

World cup anyone? 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I am a football fan but won't watch a game.

All about money, and the regime is nauseating. Put on solely for money (I am not naieve, football is of course about money, but this is only about money), no regard to player welfare in the heat.

But definingly: awarded a competition to a country that regards "queers" and women (if they had "gypsies" or a Jew dared to live there they would be in) as worthy of control and suppression at the best.

As the saying goes, I have gay friends, and a daughter, and they can shove their competition where the sun don't shine.

No way. Not in this age.

It's worth remembering that it's less than a century since we gave the vote to most adults; women had been severely discriminated against before that.

And homosexuality was only decriminalised, in part of the UK, forty years ago. Gays couldn't join the military until just over twenty years ago.

Self-righteousness is an easy trap to fall into - as we still discriminate against some minorities. Many see the Qatar World Cup as the beginning of a campaign.

I'm going to watch most matches (rooting for England of course but mainly Belgium (De Bruyne best player in the world - and a team player) to win and both Morocco and Tunisia (I love both countries).
Of course I don't like homophobia but change from within, I say.

I don't understand how past discrimination and abuse somehow justifies supporting a sports event in a country where this is currently rife. I don't get the leap Barney, or point?

Yes self righteousness can be a "trap" and a comfort-zone; but equally so seeing oneself as a pragmatist floating above the fray - which is coincidentally helpful as you get to see the footie....

If England get to the quarter finals, though, maybe my arch pragmatist will take over!
