Labour Rights - Qatar 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Which is worse in Qatar - human or labour rights? FIFA has been accused of being a 'complacent enabler of abuses' against workers.

Because of the number of deaths among the c2m (at any one time) migrant workers building the World Cup infrastructure.

Compensation schemes have been inadequate and workers - mainly from South Asia - often have to wait months to be paid.

Living conditions for workers are appalling and there's little medical care. However, the building timetable has rarely been behind schedule.

Never before has such a large project (costing $220b+) been undertaken in an undeveloped country the size of Wales.

And there will undoubtedly be consequences, reports, ramifications, legal actions and investigations for years to come.

the size of Yorkshire*

Wales is about twice the size of Qatar!

Qatar aren't hosting the World Cup for money; they don't expect a return on their $220 billion investment.

It's for prestige and status. To be the first host in the Arab world and only the second in Asia.

Hopefully, the worldwide media exposure will facilitate an improvement in human and labour rights.

Qatar is simply replicating the Saudi Arabia (its huge neighbour) plan for the future. To be more secular whilst retaining the Islamic and Arab cultures - with business and tourism as key factors in both countries.

For the moment, Qatar has beaten Saudi to the limelight - and aims to a smaller version of the future Saudi. Untapped and enormous natural resources in both countries will fund the change.

To both countries in the region, the World Cup spotlight is important to the impending changes of almost every kind.

And this part of the Arab world will grasp the opportunity tightly; the end result will define their future.

The 22 nations comprising the Arab world, and their 430 million inhabitants - perhaps?

As well as those other nations with an interest in oil, gas and other natural fuels and ingredients.

Perhaps?
Or perhaps not?
The locals are happy, while the rest are more bothered about their financial circumstances than about a few poxy human rights issues.
Enjoy the soccer, the rest of us sure will.

I think SPBarney just has Barney in his name rather than being one of Barney's personifications; but who the Devil knows anymore....!
