TOPIC: World Cup and alcohol
#227715
World Cup and alcohol 2 Years, 8 Months ago
One of the great things about the World Cup being held in an Arab country (and I'm thoroughly in favour, as you may guess) is that some of the very sensible rules of Islam are shown. I think alcohol is a poison which seems to bring out the worst in many people and can be hugely damaging to our brains and bodies. I didn't drink for years - only recently do I have a small amount (usually about once a day maximum). I've never smoked (even MORE stupid). Or done drugs (except prescribed - which I hate and keep trying to do without).

It was interesting going to the "Club Cup" in Marrakech (twice) - a far better atmosphere without alcohol than elsewhere. But Morocco, being a sensible country, does not ban alcohol but limits it and discourages it.

I think the same about sexuality. Any society is entitled to have opinions and can tolerate but discourage but should not ban aspects. So extremes (like Iran) are bad and wrong. The UK was just as bad only a few years ago (homosexuality). Some of us suffered (and are still persecuted) by the bigots. They were just forced to pretend to accept and tolerate whilst deviously pursuing people for (they think) linked crimes. The frightening aspect of religion or faith is the brain dead extreme mantra. Look at stupid Vegans. But at least they don't kill people for choosing to eat meat.

I took my daughter recently to see Chelsea in the Women's Super League football (we disagree on women's sport JK - yes they are not as fast and strong but the skills, flair and commitment make for just as exciting games) and have to say the atmosphere was wonderful

No one boozed up at all; loads Dads and families with young girls. Packed little stadium. No concerns about what some pissed bone head around us is going to yell. One of the fans handed a box of chocolates around.

It was so much more pleasurable for being in effect - if not by dictat - alcohol free.

It sounds almost like American sports games WYOT - in particular baseball; though they DO have alcohol on sale, for some reason all games are a delight for spectators. People (often whole families) were SO friendly and every match (I went to baseball games in every city, filming Ent USA) a delight. Either alcohol consumption is more sensible or Americans react better to it.

Incidentally - BUDWEISER in the middle of this drama - I seem to be allergic to something in BUD (likewise in Thai Singha beer). Get a roaring headache after three sips.

This is a lawyer's dream. Budweiser's contract to sell their beer at the 8 stadiums (and in designated zones) in Qatar is with FIFA.

FIFA has a contract with Qatar - to stage the World Cup there - incorporating an agreement to respect FIFA's obligations
with its commercial partners.

And these partners include Budweiser who have a $75m deal with FIFA. Legal action could be lengthy and costly - involving several legal jurisdictions.

Women's soccer is massive in the USA for that reason. Nothing will get watching any form of soccer. I don't like sport in general.

If you spending time with your daughter doing something you both enjoy then that's fantastic. What put me off sports fans is that seeing them vomiting on the street after a game then going back to the pub.

My daughters like me taken them out on nature walks in the New Forest or shopping in Dorset.

This is normally done by people in their 40s.

Being teetotal now I feel much better and lost a lot of weight.

When I have social drunk I have alcohol free beer the taste is almost identical.

Thank God for your detailed knowledge of contracts "Gester". Knowing there are no clauses saying "in some places" of the stadium (i.e. in boxes). Or other loopholes. Such as not caring about selling a few beers at events but caring a lot about selling millions due to all the mentions in media coverage. But you're probably right; publicity means nothing. Always wonderful to read perceptive and informed posts instead of superficial idiotic rubbish.

Okay, maybe he is genuinely stupid as well....

What do you bet Budweiser sells three times as many Alcohol-Free beer (if they make any; which I bet they do) than they would have sold alcoholic ones? Any depth of thought or examination seems beyond the ability of many (including media - if it's a good story).

Watch the headline in December -

BUDWEISER MISSED OUT ON $3 MILLION SALES AT THE WORLD CUP BUT SOLD $13 MILLION CANS OF NO ALCOHOL BEER.

It's a GREAT STORY!!!!!

You're absolutely right!

With the heat etc., there'll now be a huge demand for Bud Zero.

Budweiser's alcohol-free beer couldn't have had a better endorsement.

And it actually tastes the same as real Bud...

Indeed - this is fortuitous; making the World Cup Finals virtually alcohol free, for the first time.

A major victory for Qatar and the Muslim/Arab world. Two days before kick-off, alcohol is banned!

One has to suspect collusion; say, between FIFA and Qatar. Perhaps this was the plan/deal - all along.

Sales and orders for alcohol free beer and wine are actually on the increase.

Why would anyone one want to drink alcohol in severe heat and make yourself more dehydrated and disoriented?

Maybe Wyot could make an alcohol free beverage and name it Free Marillion.

Groups of badly behaving pot bellied middle aged louts, slugging beer and expelling gas from both orifices.
Yes ban alcohol!

They are but the problem will always be - compared to alcohol sales - that it will never match in terms of volume (so to speak!) because many people want to go on a session/get drunk on alcoholic beer.

So the football fan who used to get through 8 pints on a footie outing, will only buy a couple just to slake thirst/socialise. Same with wine - I think people will just nurse a glass for the entire evening. And have seen many doing so.

Inebriation = exponential sales! As I am sure GM saw many times back in the day.

Not a bad idea. I'm not against drinking but it concerns me that some can't go without drinking for a short period of time!

I spent 4 months working in Oman and Muscat AND BOY DID i LIKE THAT BEER AT THE END OF A HOT DAY.

Absolutely love the country pretty much for the same reasons JK likes Morocco..love Arab people.

The country has opened up now well and truly for tourism..in my day there was one hotel with starring acts like Harry Secombe.

The British are such piss pots.

Too some extent Wyot, when people got too drunk, I had to stop serving them and them home or call a taxi. Also when people got too drunk they put other people off and I lost sales.

It's a balancing act.

I can't see many footie fans sipping wine during the matches and be all fucking la-de-da. However, I love to see that for the hilarity especially from those who are shirtless and have bigger stomachs than potbellied pigs.

I feel sorry, for the partners of football fans and the innocent. Fans will take out their frustration on their partners or on a random fella in a pub or street, because a team lost.

I don't have a TV plugged in to an aerial and I will be at work. So, I have great excuses for not watching soccer nor do I have to respond to the damn question "Did you see the game last night?"

I don't many Arabs, but I do know some Sikhs Hedda. Great people with a superb sense of humour.

Do you know any Arabs who will do a trade for my partner in exchange for a rug or a camel?

That's all good to know!

Anticipated viewership is expected to be 5 billion - equating to over 227 million a day.

By far the most watched event in the history of the planet.

Ok Barney,

I doubt it would get that many, due this World Cup stinking of corruption. I was at my local today and the World Cup wasn't on any one's agenda. One bloke said 'I will be too busy fishing like always'.
