in other words "less reflective of talent".
Am I being stupid to wonder why the colour of skin or religious belief or sexual orientation should influence judgement of artistic ability?
It really confuses me.

It doesn't. They are not concerned with judging artistic merit; these people are willing to sacrifice quality of outcome for a political agenda. They politicise everything, including the arts. The right won the economic arguments, the left are winning/terrorising the social arguments in the West. It is their new home. And I'm a secular age full of young people who seek purpose: it is a new religion.
