Of course it's one step closer to a 'police state'. It's not even the present government that could mis-use these powers-we don't know what a future government may do.

Once police, authorities, have these extra powers they never want to give them up. That's what happened with the Patriot Act in the US-it had a time limit but what's the bet it will remain in force forever.

I see in Australia they just slipped through a law giving cops the right to access your computer tracks without a warrant..and the excuse given as usual-terrorism !!
