Australian cop falsely accused of historic abuse 2 Years, 3 Months ago
Here's a recent article and short documentary about an Australian police officer, Ben Smith, falsely accused of historic abuse whose wife helped to exonerate him by finding evidence the police didn't bother to find. The police had discounted evidence that exonerated him, including not bothering to take a statement from a man who the accuser said had witnessed Smith assaulting her but who told the police that he had not seen Smith doing anything wrong on that occasion or any other. He became a witness for the defence. The police subsequently investigated their handling of the case and found that they had done nothing wrong.
Ironically, the journalist in the documentary, Tara Brown (twitter.com/tarabrown60), who sympathetically interviews Ben Smith, his wife and others also sympathetically interviewed Virginia Giuffre in the 60 Minutes documentary “Exposing Jeffrey Epstein's international sex trafficking ring”.
Mr Smith faced two trials, the first ending in a hung jury. At the second, he was unanimously found not guilty. But the couple are now seeking accountability from NSW Police over the ordeal, which Mr Smith says has ruined his reputation, career and financial future.
