They tried it on me a few weeks ago.
Roofers came to clear next door's gutters (and do mine at the same time).
Whilst up there (having politely asked my permission) they found a couple of slates had come loose.
As it happened I'd seen my roof the day before and the slates were fine then.
Dislodged (accidentally or deliberately) by the clod hoppers up there "clearing the gutters".
"We can do it this weekend - the whole roof needs a proper job; we can use that scaffolding" pointing at another house "it's ours and has to come down tomorrow. That will safe you a fortune. We can put it up and do it for only £16,000".
I declined.
"We could do it for less actually; £14,500".
"Thank you, no".
They came back 5 minutes later with a "proper estimate". £11,500.
As I clearly was not falling for this they then offered a quick "patchup - as there's a hole in the roof" - seeing my face they left in a hurry.
I then contacted the house with the scaffolding. It's there for weeks - they gave me their builders' number, who were furious that a rogue firm was claiming their scaffold.
My next door neighbours had not taken on anyone to fix the gutters - they had only asked another firm how much it would be.
As it happens, my roof DOES need repairing (especially now three slates have "moved") - it's been there for 250 years.
So I've booked reputable roofers (through friends) to do it.
Incidentally, the E-M and phone number for the crooks (Bark?) do not work.
I reckon this is a scam going on all over London (and probably all over the UK) - many homes are now getting old, needing upgrades.

had similar when I lived in a mews house. Put them onto the Scottish landlord who sorted them out quick smart
