Tubs and I went to Oxfordshire, Abingdon to be precise. However when we got there we couldn't find the fishing lakes. We asked some stranger's, who had no clue despite one saying they lived in the area for 30 years they never heard of them. Tubs, said 'So you venture out then?' in a beautiful sarcastic tone.
We drove a few a yards and asked some locals, one man know the main lake's and said he would join if he didn't have work. Tubs being Tubs asked for the man's phone and asked which one the poor man work's number.
The man looked bewildered and I said to him, you're coming fishing with us not until you had a pint first.
Tubs put on a more sickly voice than he has due to cancer. And told the employer that he has 'squits' and 'I will need to stay home.'
The man was a bit embarrassed but saw the funny side, I told him 'Tubs is not well and is enjoying himself before chemotherapy starts'. I assured him he love's joking around and likes to do favours for people.
He said 'I haven't done you any favours?' Tubs sat next to him casting shadow over the gentleman. Tubs told him 'We asked around and drove and know one had a clue.' Tubs ordered me to a get a round of bitter.
The man said he doesn't fish but said he did to make a joke and be polite. Tubs, said we have spares and he would assemble the rod and lines and pay a permit. We drove a few yards up, I went to the lake owner whilst Tubs was sorting the guy out with a rod and line.
When I got live bait (maggots) Tubs said keep your lunch away from them and close the lid after use. The guy heard a myth if you put live bait in your mouth you get more fish. Tubs jokingly said it's true and demonstrated.
A few fishermen chuckled to themselves, however after we said sat on the bank without tents it wouldn't be fair as the guy didn't have one. We had a nice relaxing day and Tubs even paid the guy to have a membership for a year. Tubs told if you see me again you owe me a drink. The gentleman shook hands.
Tubs spoke to the owner telling him that the guy we are with is a novice and he might need assistance with reel and line.
The owner went over to him and told if you need help, just ask me or my assistant we can do that for you, its not a problem. When you next come in next.
So we left the guy with some old hooks, line, lures and an old rod Tubs had.
If Tubs leaves a legacy it would be for be being a big friendly giant.
