Indeed. And also what is it with America guns and shooting up at one's old school? I know there is the argument that guns are just one weapon and need the shooter to be lethal to humans etc etc. But really, whatever the combination of factors is behind this phenomenon, may it long continue to not blight our shores.

I think there's more to it than the obvious. A Christian school? Transgender man or woman? 28 years old? Resenting something?

You have nailed it JK. Remember the Colorado gay bar shooting the media was hoping it was "Magafan" turned out to be an unhinged individual from the LGBT+ community.

If it wasn't a gun I am sure they would of rammed the kids with a car. No one mentions the knife crime in the UK.

I think there will always be differing reasons, and no doubt the focus will be on a good transgender story. When the real reason - like Floyd was about Police not race - is the obvious: it is about the guns. The US has a pretty unique and major problem.

It's more parenting than anything else and bullying in schools.

This is just an assumption though GM. 26 years ago after Dunblane the UK Gov enacted very tight gun control legislation. Since then there has been a total of zero school shootings. There has been 12 in the US in the first quarter of this year alone.

Even allowing for population differences, this is a stark statistic. If the crazies just divert the weapon they use - how have they done this in the UK? What weapon is being used multiple times a month to commit mass murder of any group here?

Knife crime is a more significant problem in the US than the UK GM:

homesteadauthority.com/knife-crime-statistics-uk-vs-us/

The gun stuff is additional in the US to knife crime. Knife crime in the UK is beside the point when looking at the US gun problem.

So it's guns and not the deranged individuals fault?

As in most things GM - it's both. Different degrees in different cases. A total accident - blame goes nowhere. A massacre - blame is mainly with the perpetrator. But a loony with a knife tends to kill fewer than a loony with an assault rifle. Because humanity today can only understand extremes, it's all either "ban knives and guns" or "don't bam knives or guns". Assault rifles, machine guns, grenades, bombs seem stupid to allow easy access, to me. Simple rifles, small hand guns, tasers, pepper spray - why not?

Guns don' go off by magic.

Always the individual's fault GM. But it seems to me that it is just a matter of access to weapons that can cause such widespread harm. Nutters are everywhere. Very controlled access UK = no school shootings in 26 years. US free access = loads! Just regulate the US like the UK. Let the farmer own his shotgun, make it almost impossibly hard for a mentally deranged teenager to own an assault rifle. Just common sense. But - like so much - it is made so political...

Yes GM I agree with Wyot - it's crazy letting loonies get weapons that can kill dozens. Don't ban all guns or knives but restrict access to them and thoroughly cut back on availability of the mass murder things.

You know that loons can't be stopped nor are they easy to detect.

Again what is an assault rifle?

Are cars now assault cars?

The News tells me an assault rifle is one with many bullets in a magazine so you can kill a dozen children in one go (as opposed to one or two).

But surely GM this is the point - we are stopping the loons who, if they could, would walk into a school with an assault rifle (or whatever)? We have had no school shootings in 26 years..

Of course loons will do other things with other things.

You know they are standard magazines?

When have guns killed anyone when it's the individual that does it.

At the same time ruining it for law abiding gun owner's. New York has one the strictest gun laws in USA. Crime is thriving, people push passengers under subway trains. Or carry out unprovoked attacks with box cutters.

Yes it does GM but not as strict as UK. Though they have as a response to the Buffalo and school shootings last year tightened them up considerably, particularly with regard to semi automatic weapons.

Time will tell whether this makes a difference to mass shootings of this kind in NY.

Crime levels? I don't think controlling semi automatic weapons is linked to general crime levels at all.

I hope that legitimate owners such as yourself can continue to own guns. Also that sensible gun controls mean less children murdered.

In my view, it has all gone too far to allow unfettered access to firearms. The right to bear arms must be restricted against the right for children and adults not to be mass-murdered. It would be nice if this wasn't necessary but today, more than ever, it sadly is.
