Diane Abbott 2 Years, 1 Month ago
She has never struck me as particularly bright. However, to state that white races - in particular Jews and Roma - suffer some kind of lesser form of racism than people of colour, is historical ignorance on a jaw-dropping scale.

In the last century alone 6 million Jews and 200 000 Roma were murdered because of their race.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65365978.amp

Diane admits these groups suffer some level of racism, but not the hardcore stuff of the people of colour. Theirs, instead, is more like "being a readhead".

This is what happens when groups and people who don't actually care about abstract concepts like human rights, womens rights, racism etc (although say and I am sure to some extent believe they do) rub up against other groups.

It is at this point what they really are is revealed.

What such people care about is the one issue that affects them, and those closest to their group. Same with trans activists who don't extend the same freedoms they shout about to biological women. Same with Greta not giving a damn about the millions in poverty who would be further impoverished by her ultra green policies.

Many of the people who present as the most liberal and "good" (some of whom win Nobel prizes) are in reality the most narrow-minded and tribal.

True decency and consistent respect for and application of liberal values and the sanctity of human life, is vanishingly rare.

I actually rather like her and tend to agree with her opinion that many forms of racism are media or punter exaggeration and that people take offence too easily (including skin colour). Of course in days gone by different times provoked different levels of bigotry and stupidity. I think at present bigotry is more aimed at people whose sexual tastes differ from your own than at any race or religious sect, let alone colour of skin or hair.

I don't think she said or meant that anti semitism was trivial 80 years ago. I'm sure she thinks it was utterly appalling and widespread and offensive then, as was racism against skin colour (how absurd is that?) until quite recently. Times change. But media also changes and loves to turn a passing remark into a drama. I'm certain Prince Harry's minor spat with his family is far less serious than media says. I bet Camilla feels that many stepsons resent replacements for their mother or father for a while and I bet she knows Harry does not feel that now and will be delighted she is Queen and is very happy for his Father (who also continues to love Harry).

As the scorpion said to the frog - "It's my nature".

typical media beat-up as she wrote, ironically as the most racially abused MP, of the heirachy of abuse and basically how black people cannot hide their ethnicity.

But Heaven help anyone who dares to incur the wrath of the unrepresentative Board of Deputies and their lapdog Starmer.

No I also don't really think she would mean that non white racism was trivial, but I find it interesting that she feels comfortable drawing these distinctions in the first place.

She would condemn utterly anyone who said people of afri-carib descent these days don't suffer as much discrimination as Asians; now it is more like being picked on for having red hair.

There is such a blind spot with so many who consider themselves liberal...and when it comes to Jews I think David Baddiel in his recent book "Jews Don't Count" has really hit the nail on the head.

Yes media inflation, but Diane has shown the problem as well - not consciously or maliciously I'm sure. It just shows a lack of depth of thought, and the tribalism we all fall into at times.

Second line, of course, should read "white racism" rather than "non white racism".

Possibly I'm less sensitive than I should be but I was so aware that the "anti semite" trick used to destroy Corbyn (successfully) was the opposition using media - who are always willing to be used if it's a good story but particularly if it chimes with their agenda.

Yes the media definitely used the anti semitic angle to destroy Corbyn; it was shameless. They may be doing the same thing with Abbott. If she was more aware of where her blind spots are as a (lower case l) liberal, she wouldn't have fallen into the trap though...

And she is I suspect an essentially decent person trying to do the "right" things. As was Corbyn. It is unhelpful to us as a nation that media destroys people without qualm.

Another example of the liberal blind spot that did for Dianne:

www.gbnews.com/news/guardian-apology-rac...emitism-jews-cartoon

It is a very racist cartoon.

This was presumably lost on Guardian staff who are generally against that sort of thing I understand...
