TOPIC: God Save The King
#233522
God Save The King 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Prince Charles took over my rooms in Trinity Cambridge but I've never met him.
But I'm a huge fan of the Royal Family and think Charles will make a great king.
I'm not a republican and think the Oliver Cromwell era was a terrible scar in our history.
I think the Commonwealth is a terrific community and does huge good for the world - the best side of our country.
I, personally, think we'd be far better off if the Prime Minister was STILL selected by the Monarch.
I think Princess Anne would have been (and would be) a better PM than any of our recent ones.
Yes Ministers could still be selected from the winning party in General Elections.
Ditto local councillors.
But the current system no longer works and we should go back to letting a very decent, honest, honourable family have more control.
A fine monarchy is generally a good thing.
These days democracy does not work (look at the Liz Truss farce; ghastly Starmer; weak Davey; atrocious May and Johnson).
Give the King back some of that power that democracy has stolen.

Every time I see the horses in ceremonies I think of the FOURTH book of Gulliver's Travels - if you've never read it, and think the book is all about big and little people, you MUST read it; it's the best by far. Jonathan Swift (who lent me his name) at his best.

I remember I was at a record company annual conference, with them revealing their new signings. Afterwards the Boss of the Label asked me if I'd heard any talent there and was horrified when I answered "Only one but he's a future star" - and it was a very low down priority in the Classical section - Bryn Terfel.

Sunak good. Likewise I'm always impressed by Penny Mordaunt.
No comment on the political stances or abilities but both gave good performances.

It's wonderful being (almost) the same age as Charles - I know exactly what is going through his mind every few seconds.

Charles thinks "This Crown is bloody heavy. It's OK for Mama - she was in her Twenties. I'm nearly 80. Do you know what it's like having this thing on your head?"

Love the way Camilla can't stop herself smiling during the ceremony.

Well I think Charles deserves respect having to go through that (faultlessly) - ditto Camilla. God bless them both.

Well done to them both. I would have needed a toilet break. Looking forward to the procession back to Buckingham Palace.

Makes your heart swell with pride. Nobody can do pomp and ceremony like us British.

We've seen all the Royals in the procession, but Where's Andrew?

Only we could have done this - with an unelected, privileged and subsidised family ruling the roost. Based on an archaic system, which most modern societies have discarded years ago. As will CIII's 15 remaining kingdoms - very soon!

That's one opinion Trevor. "Ruling the roost"? Hardly. I think they should have more control, not less. But fans of the existing system may disagree.

For years I thought like Trevor, was a fervent republican. However, I changed my mind a few years back.

Precisely because they have no real power I started to look at Monarchy in a different way.

You put aside any economic argument - less monarchy does not lead to more nurses. This is not how economics works. So it boiled down to whether I wanted the archaic threads of history to thrive anachronistically today? I decided I did because our best hope for the future is to cherish and learn lessons from history. Also, our society has lost so much deference and respect in general, that it seems to me that retaining an institution that demands it is no bad thing.

Simply, does one want these things or not? Whether it is "fair" or not (the chief objection of my adolescent self) is irrelevant. And it hit me hard - yes I prefer to live in a country with a monarchy.

But being a Monarchist is different to being a Royalist. For the latter I need to retain an admiration for the current incumbents of the Royal Family. And my patience and respect is being tested by some of them.

Though I believe Charles will make a fine King.
