You can hardly ever find them now. Or pilchards. If I come across them without tomato sauce it is a cause for celebration.

I have mine soaked in vinegar and black pepper.

I have to say they were absolutely delicious - on the buttered toast, washed down with a Pimms anticipating Wimbledon (instead of strawberries - I'll have them next week).
