When I was a young man, all my friends (like Scott Walker) loved Steve McQueen (the actor). But my favourite was Rod Steiger - and watching In The Heat Of The Night (great film) on BBC4 reminds me why. A fantastic actor. You can have your Brandos and Oliviers. I just discovered his favourite painter was Van Gogh. Mine too. It all starts making sense (at 78!!!).

Of course I also adored James Dean. But that was a sexual thing.
