His Christmas show in 1978 got 20+ million viewers, it was a must-see tv. Sadly his gentle style of impressions was superseded by more cynical ascorbic usually left-wing humour from the alternative comedians, and spitting image, which I don't remember so fondly.
I think his career was destroyed by Margaret Thatcher. He didn't do female impressions, and thus his star was falling. One of the many things that Margaret Thatcher destroyed, like affordable housing, clean rivers, and nutritious school meals. She removed the necessity for school meals to have any nutritional value.
