And will now be arrested and charged rightly with escaping custody into which, rightly or wrongly, he was placed, on remand, by a Judge.
But he's still innocent until or unless found guilty in a court of law.
So... his escape was clearly not planned or he'd have taken with him some cash (easily available in prison - unofficially).
4 days on the run and only 12 miles from the jail, on a (suspected) stolen bike?
Clearly no help from the Iranians who would have given him help if they were involved on any level.
Simples.
No help even from friends or loved ones, who he'd have phoned from a payphone (collect) minutes after climbing out of the underside of the truck.
Long before he was even missed from Wanno.
So - an opportunist exit, brightly taken, effectively made (well done Dan - someone should employ him).
I do hope he has good lawyers (as rare as hen's teeth; if he needs some he should contact me).
How on earth could he have a fair trial on either charge after the helpful media (and police) have given his defence team 4 days of crucial evidence?
It is not a crime when you leave a prison, if you've been allowed to leave a prison (incompetence is no excuse HMP Wanno).
They might get him for nicking a bike (I'd pay his fine).
If he'd done anything - anything - for Iran they'd have spirited him into a passing Embassy. The propaganda would have been worth millions.
Over to the CPS I suppose.
Just my thoughts - I know nothing. Apart from what - we all - read in the media.
And the words expressed by Alex Chalk. Police and Ministers. So helpful. To the media.
So remember this. I'm saying nothing. I'm just posting.
Presumption of Innocence. Still, technically, the law.

I don't really think it is fair to charge someone with escaping prison when it is the fault of those supposed to be looking after him.

I suggest that if this man had come to harm, the prison service would be responsible.
