Like so many, the simplistic solution ("Stop small boats") is no solution to a complex problem. Allow would-be migrants to come into the UK legally and cheaply on a twice weekly ferry service arriving at a secure point where they can be assessed legally and efficiently. Saving millions on coast guards and police. Saving thousands of lives. This has nothing to do with whether we should allow all, some or none to stay in the UK. It is a way to deal humanely and legally with immigrants.

This is a first priority for Governments (forgetting how we then treat people arriving at our borders). 99% of people mistake controlling our borders with sending people away.

As with all other areas of public life this Gov is failing dreadfully. But it will do anything not to make this the "issue".

Absolutely. If you've fought your way through Europe and want to reach the UK, doesn't it make more sense to do it legally for £20 instead of illegally and dangerously for £2000? Your chances of escaping capture and staying in the UK illegally are only slighly higher if you enter in a small boat; vastly outweighed by the chances of dying or spending a fortune. And SO much better for the UK that there is a secure, safe route that can be policed on entry. Saves millions on wasted police and coast guard costs. SOOO obvious but why don't media or politicians DO it?

Media don't because then a good story of alien feckless rapist brown folks invading our Sceptered Isle disappears, politicians because these stories exist, the majority belive them and like to blame invading foreigners for all their own failings, and politicians don't care about the long term health of the country, they care about re-election.
