TOPIC: Hereditary Peers

Hereditary Peers 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago
At last, these will disappear under new Labour legislation - where, when a peer reaches 80, during the life of a parliament - he/she must retire. Not before time!

Oh who bloody cares Barney.

But if I was to engage in this unimportant detail - why 80? Some are sharper at 80 than 50.

Because it's a simple and easy way to bring a totally unfair/illogical practice to an end - where unelected individuals' offspring automatically become members of the House of Lords.

Yeah great we get more elected people; trying something new like that will sort all our problems out!

Amazing post. We shouldn't decide our future?

Few would say hereditary peers make sense.

Lifetime peers only, perhaps - deserved ones.

There are nearly 900 peers..nonsensical

Not what I said, at all. In any way, shape or form.

But how sweet to walk around believing that if about 35% of people vote for a party 100% of people somehow *decide* the country's future.

And why do you assume there is a link between voting for someone and your wishes being implemented?

We don't live in a fairy tale.
