Edna O'Brien has died at the age of 93. She shot to fame with the 1960 novel "The Country Girls", which became part of a trilogy. She also went to school with my mother in County Clare.
EOB was ostracised in the Republic of Ireland for breaking many taboos - mostly policed by the Catholic Church, in the 50's and 60's.
Sex outside marriage was unthinkable, as was homosexuality and women were obliged to be subservient. With the priest in charge!
Living her life in London, EOB continued to be a thorn for Irish Catholicism for her long life. And will be remembered for starting the eventual revolt against the church.
When many priests were found to have used their power for their sexual gratification.

She did show some light on what Ireland was like but it was in a negative way. Abortion and the English (Not Wyot of course) was spoken about many times over the dinner table.
