TOPIC: National Anthems
#246734
Al Gershwin

National Anthems 10 Months ago
The French one makes many cry - because of the their pride, amazing composition and willingness to express how they feel.

Better too, than one saying 'save' a person who could be anybody in time. At the closing ceremony, the French anthem wasn't sung.

Just played by an orchestra, quietly - to avoid emphasising a fantastic success. Tour de France coverage gave publicity hints!

Barney, the "saving" bit in the national anthem is not really about the person.
The monarch is an embodiment of the nation, so it is really "God save us and our countries"

Perhaps we should sing it with gusto at the moment?

Our anthem is described as 'a musical salute for the monarch'...

I never understood why Jerusalem is not used.

God Save The Queen/King is a dirge and why don't they sing the rest of the verses?

Musical might be pushing it.

I agree Honey, it's dreary. Why is there only a few bars sung, yet in cricket they have Jerusalem which is deep poem/hymn. I am sure there is a lot of households with a copy of Brain Salad Surgery by ELP in their attics or garages.
