TOPIC: The African Queen

The African Queen 9 Months ago
Must have watched this 20 times (it's on BBC2 now). One of the greatest films ever made. People forget Robert Morley's excellent part in it. It is essentially a two hander with Bogart and Hepburn utterly magnificent - possibly both their finest roles. But Morley is great in his early role too, as Hepburn's brother the Reverend.

My two favourite Bogart films--The African Queen and the Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Bogart didn't have the classic good looks of other stars, but the camera still adores him.

Might even be the greatest! Released around Christmas 1951, and partly filmed in London. Won Bogart his only Oscar.

Neither Kate nor Hump are technically beautiful yet this is a super love story as well as a great adventure.

Imagine being young and seeing this film for the first time. It must boost your hope for humanity - and the makers of film, music, theatre, TV... We can still do it, with this legacy behind us.

Sadly he died when 57 - he smoked and drank a fair bit. Met his last wife, Lauren Bachall, on a film set; she - 19; he - 44. Here's a pic of them arriving in London, in 1951.

Yes 2 of my favourite films and Bogart and Hepburn were magnificent in the African Queen.

When I lived just off Portobello Road and was going for an early walk I suddenly heard this recognizable voice commenting on some antiques in a shop..Katherine Hepburn with another lady.
