I knew him but I came late to an appreciation of Groucho Marx, really only discovering him when I sat through the whole of the 1930's movie Duck Soup one afternoon when it was on Channel 4 about 15 years ago. I immediately loved it and have searched so much more out since.
When I was young I was mostly into Laurel & Hardy and also Harold Lloyd, both these frequently shown early evening on BBC2. A shame they can't introduce modern children to them, like they did to me as a modern child at the time.
Some great quotes from Groucho aren't there. Some fit the current day and age nicely.
Gregg Wallace -
"Women should be obscene and not heard."
Starmer -
"Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others."
Starmer -
"The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made."
Current UK -
"I worked my way up from nothing to a state of extreme poverty."
Perhaps we should blame Groucho for Savile taking his advice -
"A man's only as old as the woman he feels."
Spoilt for choice with wonderful wise cracks -
