I have a lot of sympathy for the once powerful Australian broadcaster Alan Jones as more accusers come out of the woodwork as so often happens in these cases.

There will be more.

I was living in Soho when he foolishly got busted in the Picadilly bogs by suspect cops in the late 80s.

Why he used the facility when he was staying at the nearby Ritz is a mystery but he's always had a sort of furtive look.

The case burst into sensational news in Oz taking London cops by scary surprise obviously thinking he was just another businessman who would cop a fine and a magistrate's lecture the next day and hobble off home.

Instead powerful friends jumped up including Margaret Thatcher and then Lord Archer plus one who highly visibly put Jones up at his Mayfair home, Rupert Murdoch.

Police dropped the charge the next day. Heads apparently rolled in the Soho Vice Squad and several young officers were moved to other forces.

But still in Australia horrible people including vile media pundits talk as though somehow the Soho matter was proved.

I've had a couple of run=ins with Jones over the years but never held it against him & he still says hello.

I always thought of him as a bit of a sad closeted gay from another era yet media people and some top journalists who thought likewise always attacked him as someone who should declare his preferences. How dare they.
