Has the media really ran out of ideas? I know the BBC buying programmes from production companies. Bringing back Eldorado is a joke, it was a flop for a reason like the Dallas reboot and Ironside.
If I recall correctly, back in the early 90's the BBC spent something like £10 million on a set abroad for that claptrap and were slammed for it. Fewer people than ever are watching soap operas, they are no longer the big ratings draw that they used to be. I'm convinced the mainstream channels are in a race to chase away as many viewers as they can manage. At this they are at least succeeding.
How about the BBC invests on what they used to do really well, show strands like Horizon for example. Why have they only made 1 edition of this well respected programme in two and a half years since summer 2022 and only 16 since 2020? Slowly mothballing even this BBC jewell. Shame on them!
Yorkshire TV filmed Duty-Free in a studio but only the Christmas special was filmed in Spain as a treat for the cast and crew. Even the Christmas Special was shit.
It does not surprise me the BBC were pissing away public money overseas and I doubt the full £10 million went on a set, most of the money probably went on cocaine.
I have no idea who the BBC are trying to find for a target market for the Eldorado reboot.
Most people laughed at Eldorado and watched it for the hammy acting. Do you remember Albion Market or Night and Day, I did like Night and Day, it was like watching amateurs trying to do Twin Peaks and V. It got a bit juicy if you watched the late-night editions in the early hours. The plots still didn't make sense.
I also remember Channel 5 spending a lot of money on Family Affairs when only a small number of the population could watch Channel 5.
From 7 years ago - £10 million for this? £10 million was a lot of money 30 years ago. (Public money)
BBC still don't do their homework, I can't believe mugs are still paying for them. I don't think drill music is a problem it's the people behind the genre, for street cred. I remember when heavy metal was supposed to be satanic and promoted suicide. The bands played on that fear to sell more records and albums.
Never watch soaps. Well, apart from watching an episode of Eastenders years ago when Mike Baldwin had a punch up with Pat Butcher.TV now is the pits. Big Brother paved the way. Imagine if they did I Claudius today---nope, neither can I.
I do remember QED very well with its interesting logo a bit like a neon sign and tune to go with it. That was on longer ago that I dare to think about wasn't it.
What was creepy about the show GM?
On modern soaps, I was an avid Brookside fan in the 80's from the start of Channel 4 when I was only just into big school aznd stuck with it to the mid 90's. Now that was real in those days. It then became shite just after the mid 90's and I stopped watching completely and not long after it was gone for good having thrown away it's audience that knew quality versus crap when it was served up to them. I enjoyed Coronation Street in that era too and if you look back at some of the acting on YT it is superb at times. It was my misfortune to be sitting with someone watching Coronation Street a few times recently in the evenings and it didn't look like the programme with that name I remember. The whole thing looked sterile and soulless. The Rovers looked like a TV set, in the 80's it looked and felt like a pub even though it was a TV set. They were able to create real atmosphere. The modern soap acting, well let me say that I saw better acting during my own drama lessons at school from people who had no interest in the field than I did on some of those recent Coronation Streets. That also doesn't look long for this world to me. You mentioned cocaine, I think some people are addicted to these shows like hard drugs and just can't get off them even though they know the quality is garbage and they want to stop.
What I found QED creepy is that showed very early AI, some people surviving the odds about death and the edition about the one-armed chef who was fantastic with cooking skills.
If I remember correctly there was a short bloke with ageing disease or something with a big nose like Pinnochio.
I went off Brookside when they did an incest storyline. What is it with soaps and incest?
