Drug dealers never turn their phones off and they have several in their pockets.


My phone is off most of the time. I don't pick up my phone whilst driving even hands free is rejected.

This comment is very true. I stick mine in a drawer a lot and forget about it. I will not allow it to rule my life. I wish I could say the same about my laptop though.

If we are expected to all have a smart phone and carry it on us at all times even when out and about then we might as well all get the government to microchip us like pets with something inserted into our arm, backside, head or whatever. What's the difference.

I detest the obsession with doing everything with smartphones. It's discriminatory, for one thing. Not everyone can afford to fork out for one or the package to go with it. (And not everyone is adept at using them - including me!) Allow people to use them if they want to, but they shouldn't replace other less automated methods.

What if your phone just dies on you?

This currently exists in the USA with also car insurance policies on their smart phones.

It's a bit of a worry when you are old and decrepit like me and you are aware of some cognitive decline where the online world can be overwhelming at times.

I always carry cash (is king) now as I'm fearful of credit/debit cards crashing and being stuck somewhere.

Worryingly there is even talk of cash being outmoded.

There were several bakeries in Wiltshire that were card only... they have closed. There's a tea room that opened a few doors away from the card only bakery and roughly the same time. The tea accepts cards and cash. Is still thriving. Especially when youngsters get their pastries at home time.

I don't know one human that doesn't have a card and a phone. Absolutely essential when travelling in Europe, and elsewhere - and the smartphone ID will make getting around even easier, as well as expense reckoning etc. Cash - sadly - has a short life ahead of it! Rare in NYC nowadays; the US will bid adieu first!

Depends where in NYC Barney. Some areas of NYC are piss poor and many shoplift.

Give it a few years, many won't be able to afford holidays around Europe etc. and many will be stuck in their 15-minute city.

I had to ask my friends and my daughters in NY. If they still use cash, they all said "Yes".

In my Manhattan restaurant last week, the credit card machine was brought to virtually every table, to settle the bills. About 25% of the tips were left in cash.

At my hotel, every account (on my visit to reception) was settled by credit card - and the airline didn't take cash for in-flight purchases; merchandise or food.
