One of our long lunches - myself, Mistress Fry and Mistress Gambaccini - was one of the nicest we've ever had with stories and reminiscences about old friends and passing acquaintances. Sadly a lot of it unrepeatable as we've all three been in the exclusive area which demands discretion, even about those who have passed away (the majority, these days). Stephen told a lovely story about Lionel Bart.
There is something really pleasant about meeting old friends. At our ages we can indulge in quite long lunches without having to rush away. I first became aware of Stephen when he was an undergraduate - looked after by agent Richard Armitage (Noel Gay's son) who was a dear friend of mine, who suggested Stephen adapt a musical (Me and My Girl) of his father's songs and sweetly asked my permission to include The Sun Has Got His Hat On (one of my covers of his Dad's tunes - I still actually prefer my followup, Who's Been Polishing The Sun).
I'd never heard the actual specifics of how Richard had persuaded Stephen to write it. A joy for me and Paul to hear the story in detail.
