Trump wants a minerals deal because he wants America's money back. Well, what about every other country's money? How many billion has the UK spent on the war? Yet the British public, who get incredibly hot uunder the collar about the licence fee, appear unconcerned that a vast amount of the country's resources has been drained over the past three years or so on a war that no one seemed that committed to ending in the near future.
The German political writer Max Weber wrote in the 1910s about the Iron Cage of modern politics, which is so bureaucratic and methodical and entitled that, increasingly, hardly anything gets done. He also predicted that, briefly, a populist figure would gain power by promising to break out of the Iron Cage and get things done. Trump's success is that - people are so sick of nothing seeming to happen that when a figure turns up and promises that, one way or another, he'll do some deals, they don't seem bothered by the means, they just seem relieved that something is happening. It's alarming, but the blame resides within that cage - the orthodox politicians need to start providing alternative, practical, plans to deal with these issues.
