A 'Right Said Fred' World 2 Months ago
I think we've regressed into a Britain in which Bernard Cribbins' hit single ought to be the national anthem.

A week or so ago, a van turned up in our residents' parking area and put cones out, then a sign saying 'no parking for the next five days'. Then he drove off again. He wasn't an 'official'. He was just some twerp from a commercial company.

Nothing happened for the next three days, apart from residents having to park their cars elsewhere.

On the fourth day, a different van turned up and three blokes got out, apparently from a cable company, dug up the path (well, two of them did, the other one stood and watched), then covered the hole with sand and left.

On the fifth day, another different van arrived, three other blokes disembarked, and two of them filled in the hole with tarmac while the third one watched. Then they drove off.

On the sixth day, another van arrived, two blokes got out, took a picture of the concrete cover that had been laid and then left. A few hours later, another team arrived, dug back up the cover, did something or other inside and then re-laid the cover and drove off.

On the seventh day, the original bloke drove up and, very slowly and seemingly reluctantly, removed the cones and the sign banning parking.

Several days later, yet another van arrived. These blokes were from a rival cable company. They looked at the work done, took pictures, had a natter on the phone, and then told residents that the other cable had cut their cable during the 'procedure' and so they'd now have to dig everything up and repair the damage.

A day later, a bloke arrived to put out some cones and a sign banning parking.

And it all started again.

Aside from the fact that I doubt, deep down, any of them, as commercial companies, actually had the right to ban residents from parking and take over the area as if they were the council, the blatant waste of resources, time and labour power was just pathetic.

And it's hardly any wonder that local communities don't push their councils to get their area into some kind of better shape, because the councils ignore it all because they're obsessed with cycling!

Altogether now:

'We was getting nowhere
And so we had a cuppa tea and...'

Have you a local paper that might publish this as a reader's letter? I think it deserves to be.
