Well again, WYOT, I have to defend the ghastly Trump. At least he tried and continues to try. At least he managed to save a few thousand lives and get a few dozen hostages returned home. It was never going to be easy but - for me - he has done far better than Biden, Sunak, Starmer, Macron, Trudeau and the rest. I simply cannot go along with the majority of Trump haters and condemn him for his approach to both problems.

Yes I admit I can't stand the man (I know you are no fan either) and it colours how I see and write about him. He did try, yes. Though I remain unsure about his motives given the Ukraine mineral grab, I suppose it could have worked...

Do his motives matter? People lived who would have died. As you know I think Ukraine should now drone bomb St Basils and the Kremlin to get Putin to agree to a FULL ceasefire, not just a partial one.

I didn't write very clearly. I was trying to say while his motives are probably self serving, that it could possibly have worked is the main point.

Bomb the Kremlin? Putin would be safe somewhere in a bunker and just double down on Ukraine. The man is evil and hasn't given a damn about the thousands of dead Russian troops, fighting and dying for his twisted little ego...

I don't think Putin has a morsel of respect for Trump. Sees him as an idiot. This is the problem. The Zelenskyy Oval office meeting didn't help at all. But I agree that talking is better than no talking. The big problem Trump has is that he's surrounded himself by sycophantic idiots. And he's still talking about invading Canada. Should anything like that happen it will only empower Russia, Israel, China, North Korea. And the rest of his policies are appalling too.

Like many who consider Trump's bluff and blunder to be his real plan, I think you're mistaking this for his real intentions. But I could be wrong.

Trump is not going to invade Canada. Trump just says things for effect, it's been said recently that his opponents must not take everything quite so literally. Although I'm quite interested on the Panama Canal issue, maybe he will do a Grenada 1983 style situation at some point. I think he mostly sees things in terms of strong arm economocs though rather than militarily. The case for Greenland is sensible from our own western interests and we should not be letting any part of it fall into Russian or Chinese hands or influence, it is part of Nortn America after all despite the Danish sovereignty.

I do agree with you on Putin though, I don't think he respects Trump much either, sees him as a useful idiot he can manipulate at every turn. Anything Putin agrees to won't be worth the paper it's written on. Perhaps Trump should tell Putin he agrees to a permanent ceasefire and the situation as it is now, or he will move some nuclear weapons into Ukraine for their defence. That might make Putin sit up and start getting serious about things. Peace through strength is the only language Putin will ever understand.

Not so sure Rich. Any kind of nuclear threat is one hell of a gamble. However, if all else fails then that could be the only alternative. And why is it Putin never seems to age? At one time they were saying he was seriously ill. No evidence of that now at all. He seems as fit and as coherent as ever. More than Trump in fact.

Again the question must be asked: if the blood thirsty Israelis can (falsely) claim to pinpoint 100s of Hamas as they destroy every inch of Gaza and murder 100s, how come they cannot pinpoint the hostages?
