It started in - I think - 2020 during the first Panicdemic Lockdown. We were allowed one hour out of our homes. After shopping I went across Hyde Park to the Serpentine to feed the swans, geese and ducks. But I was amazed by the tiny birds who swooped on my bits of bread, catching them in mid air. Back home I googled them and found they were baby starlings. Then they started lining up on my bare arms, hopping down one by one into the palm of my hand to snatch a crumb before going off whilst another joined the line of ten (always ten) on my arm.
This year - virtually no starlings as I walked out before the Boat Races. But literally dozens of tourists snapping the swans and geese and seagulls (I hate seagulls) as I fed them.
Walking back two adult starlings joined me, hopping alongside all the way back to the Bayswater Road. Odd.
