Watching the crowds gather I know every inch of the Vatican, having visited Rome almost every year for the past 60 years and longer. One of my very favourite cities like Paris, London, New York... Fantastic place in a fantastic country.

Yes Rome is just the most beautiful city and I love Italians.

How exciting, cannot wait to see who the new Pope is.

Leo 14th seems like a good guy, very much a supporter of the wonderful Francis. Positive.

Agreed - but, for example, gay sex/marriage should immediately be made 'not a sin....'

Priests who abused children - should be prosecuted; so far, they just disappeared

Hopefully a new beginning for billions; what LEO says next - is the big question.

I hope he speaks moral truth to power and involves himself in politics, wars; call out the murderers for what they are in the language a Pope should use: evil.

Robert Prevost in his Twitter feed has been very critical of Donald Trump, JD Vance and MAGA.

Prevost is now of course Pope Leo XIV.

We are in for interesting times.

He should do a lot of things wyot - but fixing things at home must be the first priority.

In Ireland, a rampant/known paedophile priest (Sean Fortune) was famously backed to the hilt by senior clergy, for years.

As well as hundreds more, in virtually all countries.

Francis was the first Pope to acknowledge it - and apologise.

I don't go along with all this priests being paedos nonsense. Growing up in the 50s we all knew about priests fiddling with choir boys and even the youngest was well aware how to stop them (knee in the balls). What gets forgotten is that many gay boys were delighted to have the odd consensual experience. Vicars and priests often were ordained because they knew they were gay and couldn't cope with the world. Most became celibate. Some married. A few fiddled. So what? Get over it. Times change.

Worth considering - is this a better way to choose a leader than "Democracy"? People who know the individuals, are informed about all the problems and areas, selecting somebody for perceived abilities rather than for image?

I think so. And relating this to your other post JK, the process should be held completely privately/in secret, otherwise "democratic" considerations will inevitably creep in and water it down....

I disagree Al. The first priority must be in being Christ's word in the world; regardless of our individual beliefs, what is the point of the church otherwise?

It becomes just a watery earthly "political" arm. Condemn the murderers in no uncertain terms. Using religious not secular language. And do it daily. Forget politics.

Yes the politicians are clearly not up to the task. We must look to religious leaders to actually fulfill their purpose. Alas, I fear they have long ago abandoned that to earthly concerns.

So victims should just forgive and forget JK? Not all scars heal.

Exactly GM. Scars never heal - that's why they are scars. Wounds heal and sometimes become scars. We live with them. And not all victims are victims. I reckon 5%.
