TOPIC: Tennis - watching Queens

Tennis - watching Queens 3 Days, 14 Hours ago
Three set matches are a wank. Only 5 set matches really test a player (one reason why women's matches are usually boring).

I've only just realised how I simply don't enjoy three set matches. Anybody can win a set and it's not that hard to get two out of three. The skill and energy and ability to last for five sets (like that stunning French Open final) is what makes great tennis.

OK I mainly root for Novak at Wimbledon - he deserves that last final victory. But I would love another Sinner/Alcatraz five set final with an Italian win.

I agree about the 3 set format. It leaves too much to luck and doesn't allow for tenacity and the mental strength to turn things around. How is the 3 set even justified in 2025? Do we disapprove of sweaty women? Give the ladies 5 sets...

Maybe the final should be 5 sets, but I feel that a lot of the early rounds are a procession and playing 5 sets is just a drag to watch and just delays the inevitable. How many times are the winner of a 5 set match not leading after 3 sets, not many. People have got increasingly lower and lower attention spans and they are doing more and more to reduce the length of matches (no tie-breaks until the final set, and then changed to a 10 point tie-break in the final set). We all remember that 5 day match in 2012 on court 12 at Wimbledon. We don't want to go through that again. Although scheduling is not feasible to have 5 sets in the smaller tournaments, they only usually have 4 or 5 courts and no floodlights or roofs.
