Apparently on the international stage a country can gain membership of a club such as the EU or the ECHR to name two, but should never be allowed to leave it after crossing the threshold according to some people, even if circumstances change. Now that really is idiotic.

Starmer got the UK back in the EU via the back door. Gordon Brown tried to get the UK to sign up to various conventions so it couldn't leave the EU.
Cameron bottled it when his deal was rejected; the ballot paper said nothing about deals, it's either Remain or Leave.
