I couldn't see any positives; only negatives emerging.
Remember... I named The Brits (in 1987 when I presented and wrote the show). Before that it was called The British Pop And Rock Awards which I found rather less catchy. Not many people know this but BRITS stands for British Record Industry Trusts Show.
After the fiasco that was 1989 (Mick Fleetwood and Sam Fox) they begged me to take over so I revived it and produced it in 1990, 1991 and 1992 but resigned after 3 years when the majors tried once again to take the reins from my hands and grab the event back.
I still wish they would put together a show which...
a) was great television (Awards shows rarely are)
b) sold loads more British music around the world (we did in my era)
c) alerted British fans to unusual good music (we featured some unsigned bands - CARTER USM got signed thanks to their Brit appearance)
d) entertained (I got Maggie Thatcher crooning How Much Is That Doggy In The Window at one Brits - you could have heard a pin drop)
I expect tonight's show will be spectacular, competent, dull and very, very unoriginal.
"And the winner is..."
PERLEEEZE!
