I had a spare evening last night so read the new Ben Elton novel.
It is set in our future in a London ravaged by floods and global warming where a Tropical Climate and a fully interactive surveillance society is in place.
It follows the story of one man who wants privacy.....
The world which Elton describes is very horrible - but is almost an exaggeration of what exists now.
What made me laugh alot was the references to special FAITH CONCERTS where 250,000 crammed into the New New Wembley to change the World by being at a er...concert. Well described and totally cynical.
ELTON also takes aim at Religion ( Blind Faith ) and Islam and the media panics about Paedos.
Without wishing to spoil the story I wont tell you the ending - except to say that it sees ELTON take a final pop at The Police State.
Not the best I have ever read - but entertaining and has enough interesting moments to keep it intellectually stimulating.
Could it be prophetic ? I hope not or we are facing a horrible future - but the seeds of what Elton is saying are already there......a World ruled by Political Correctness allied to a a Fundamental Religious Cult.....basically the worst of "liberalness" and the worst of "extremist religion" put together.........
