I admired him for speaking about what he believed in, although I didn't agree with him. He is also the main reason why labour didn't get into power for 18 years, as Labour reached an all-time low in popularity under him.
Bruce Kent (who I meet often at prison reform meetings) said all Foot wanted to talk about 18 months ago was Jonathan Swift. Being a huge Swift fan, I'm on his side.
The reason he didn't get into power was the apalling right wing media hatchet jobs that were never ending.
Who forget the infamus Cenotaph photos of him in a shabby coat and the hysteria as though it was some sort of insult to the dead..total crap. And it was never ending.
Sad news, but as already pointed out a good innings.
What I liked about him was his honesty,he could have changed, covered up his beliefs, and got a lot furthur in politics as a result. The fact that he didn't only goes in his favor as a man.
Tony Blair & co could have learnt a lot about honesty from him,we'd never have invaded Iraq had he have been pm.
