Yet another example of incompetence it would seem. As in the case of women who cry rape, there may come a time when nobody will ever be believed, should they complain of abuse or assault. Those who tell lies and fabricate stories, only serve to discredit those who are telling the truth about their own situations.
It's a very difficult one JK. As a psychologist I've dealt with many young adults and children who have suffered abuse of some kind and those who pretend they have.I can usually differentiate between the 2, but I'm not correct every time. In this case it should have been blatantly obvious to everyone that the girl was a pathological liar, though just because someone fabricates stories, doesn't mean they may not have been raped or abused. Until human beings are programmed to always tell the truth, we'll keep having injustice and for each attention seeking (or financial seeking)liar that sends an innocent man to prison, there will be some woman or child too frightened to tell the truth letting an abuser or rapist off scot free.
The whole system needs reviewing but just where do you start ?
Very wise words Mike and I hate the inevitable fact of false accusations that guilty abusers will go free... 18 Years, 10 Months ago
Check out Carol Sarler's article in the Mail today; surely our prime concern must be to lessen the effect on victims? Then, secondly, it's find and prevent the abusers.
Instead it seems "construct evidence to gain convictions" has crept into pole position.

It appears that the police now have a 100% positive DNA profile and have matched it to someone who is currently in Broadmoor.
I wonder how Colin Stagg - the man who the police desperately tried to fit-up (even to the point of using entrapment by sending a female police officer to offer him sex if he "confessed", thinking it would be "off the record" but was secretly being taped) feels now?

This is why we need to rely on corroborative evidence, not just on a mere allegation. Where there is no other evidence there should be no case to answer. This was the ruling of King Alfred several centuries ago. It should still be the policy today. Innocent until proven guilty.
