Christmas thread - Reincarnation. 13 Years, 7 Months ago
Although several seem not keen on Brian Blessed, he told a strange story about the Dalai Lama telling him his brother (who was very ill) would die shortly but don't worry, he would be happily reincarnated as a boy in Halifax in Canada. Some years later Brian went to the address and - without revealing the connection - met the boy who was amazingly like his brother had been. You can probably see the section on iPlayer - it was the Fern Britton one.

So what do we think? Hogwash? Madness? A grain of truth? Possible?

as I commented in another thread...I have a very good friend in town who is a NASA scientist and this question of reincarnation arose over dinner.

Once you start to talk to a scientist about their work..or they yours..it becomes quite bizarre.

I believe in spiritualism and...lots of other isms (social...) and he the opposite.

So apart from telling me amazing stuff about the current Mars mission etc etc ( this bloke was part of the team that discovered Mars once had water)...I asked him about 'infinity' as I cannot conceive of it.

Nor could he !!!...and he explained it thus...that as there are a hundred billion stars in this galaxy...and stars are what they are studying at present...and then a hundred billion galaxies (or more) in this universe...that no scientist will contemplate what is outside our universe or 'infinty' as it is such a difficult concept that it troubles their mind too much and diverts from more pressing problems.

And Richard Dawkins and the Sceptics believe they know it all !!

I've always been an "ItDoesn'tMatterIST" in that I think, if you believe in something and allow your morality and values to be based on that, you may well find yourself behaving unreasonably.

However, the concept of reincarnation is interesting.

I quite like the philosophy (mine) that you come back as the person you most despised and loathed. So a racist, bigotted heterosexual will return as a gay black liberal. That way, you tend to behave better.

In that case it looks like you're destined to return as Gordon Brown, Monsieur King.
