If I can possibly avoid flying in or out of Britain I do; traffic on the road during the 1-2 hours to reach airport; hours to get through security to start with; usually one or two hours flight delay; jammed planes - car and Eurotunnel or trains and fly out of Europe - much better.
I think the problem is mainly at the three London Airports. Recently flew to France from Bristol. No problems either way, and this weekend fly to Germany from Birmingham. (Fingers crossed!).
I've never understood how inefficient airports are. Unlike other forms of transport, I imagine 99% of passegers book flights well in advance, so Customs, Passport Control and other Airport Agencies know in advance the number of people likely to be travelling through at any time in the immediate future, so should be able to plan. In the end they just take advantage of the fact that flying is significantly faster than other means of travel and eat into the time saved. (Birmingham to Paris by land, say 10 to 12 hours. By air, 1 hour, plus 2 hours messing about at each end!)
Yes - South of France to London by fast trains and Eurostar - 8 hours door to door. An hour to Nice Airport; 2 hours checking in and security; an hour's delay; other people's farts recycled as air for 3 hours; 2 hours getting back through the queues and an hour from Heathrow to littler house - 10 hours of misery, catching diseases, stress and clogged veins.
