TOPIC: Olympics - off we go!

Olympics - off we go! 12 Years, 12 Months ago
I see that old Eurovision argument is coming up "we don't want to host it; it costs a fortune". I totally disagree with that; I think the event will earn billions for the UK; tourists, hotels, restaurants, entertainment, merchandise...

I'm thoroughly in favour of it. A positive few weeks, so far well organised, under budget.

I still fear it will attract a terrorist incident though, as I've said, unconnected directly.

But big events can always do that (I had huge rows with the BPI when I increased security at The Brits the year the IRA sent a rocket at Downing Street).

Generally it's great we've hosted them and should be a real triumph for Brand UK.

Mind you, personally I'm not in the slightest bit interested in the Games.

olympics

It's only under budget because they gave a massive budget of £9.3bn (4 x the estimated cost) with a 2bn contingency.

As for well organised, it hasn't started yet (apart from football), and we've already had GS4 and the cock-up with the North Korean's getting the wrong flag.

That said I'm looking forward to going to Wimbledon on sunday to see the tennis.

If its going to benefit anyone it'll benefit the people of London. Why not a GB games so everyone gets a piece of the pie? It stinks having to pay for something that most up here (Scotland) will never witness. Thanks for the token Women's football by the way. Upgrade to VIP seating costing an additional £1 says it all.

I have the first five episodes of Newsroom ready to watch already when this farce finally begins.

Will watch the football though, but then that's normal for me. The rest of it, not really interested.

Oh dear, one of the Welsh footballers has been listed in the match programme as English!

Well noticed Nick; I must admit to getting hooked (the cycle races have been superb).

Absolutely true; I wonder how many others have found themselves hooked by sports they never had the slightest interest in? Or am I alone in this?
