Sick Country continues... 12 Years, 10 Months ago

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2206976...k-lose-benefits.html
A father was disgusted after his severely disabled son might have to prove he couldn't work in order to receive benefits.
Liam Barker, 18, was not expected to live beyond three months old after he was born paralysed and has remained on life support since birth.
But Liam defied his prognosis and celebrated his milestone birthday in December last year despite being born with an incredibly rare condition, called myotubular myopathy, a terminal muscle wasting disease.

This is the problem with the Posh boys who run our country, but you would have thought that Cameron, who had a very disabled child, would have put in some compassion to the system?

Once again you are letting your personal circumstances cloud the issue

And you say 'these people who will never contribute anything'. Are you suggesting that the disabled should be euthanised? Where do we stop, kill everyone who reaches 70? If say you develop cancer or another disease, put them down too?
Not at all ... but what has really been achieved if a child, expected to die at 12 months lives till 14 months?
You'd change that mindset if you were in that position. And a lot is achieved, particularly from a health service point of view, which may allow another child to live a lot longer (or perhaps be taken off that list).
Agreed - and you will remember how hard I campaigned against the illegal Iraq war.
BUT - I read now that people are having breast enlargements on the NHS - whatever savings we make, there will be someone to waste the money.
That's a totally different thing though. Keeping an innocent child or adult alive and as painfree as possible is different to someone deciding to have bigger (or smaller) mammary glands.
If you came down with a devestating disease, wouldn't you want to have an extended quality of life as possible? If you don't, that's your choice of course, but small children - and perhaps the elderly - may not have that choice to make.
If we started to tax properly big businesses maybe there would be enough to go around. Taking from the welfare budget for the mega rich to stay mega rich isn't really the best idea....
... or maybe the big business will relocate - then we would have NO TAX income at all?[/quote]
So all the big businesses will leave the country if tax is raised? That is a strawman argument of the mega rich, but they will never leave because the laws in this country benefit them more so than going to Dubai or anywhere like that.

What's your views on smokers and European immigrants ITK ?
I'm a believer in freedom - and people should (generally) have the right to do whatever they want (as long as it does not cause harm to others).
If smokers want to take the (known) risks - thats up to them - but I dont see why I should pay for their treatment when the worst happens.
Re : European migration. A little more difficult. I'd prefer that they weren't here, but can't really blame anyone for looking for a better life for themselves and their families.
How many millions of Brits moved to South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia, Canada, New Zealand etc - in search of a better life?
How many Brits have moved to Spain etc?
I blame the EU - I was very in favour of a common market but no one ever asked us about further enlargement and integration. What on earth has, say, a farmer in Eire got in common with a farmer in Turkey?????
They don't speak the same language, have the same culture, religion or politics - how can anyone expect them to be members of the same club????
