The kind of news NOT making the headlines 12 Years, 9 Months ago
The Russians want to honour British veterans who ran the convoys up to Murmansk and Archangel. The government says they can't.

I know of some Norwegian helicopter pilots who saved some Russians on an ice flow. The telephonist at the company where they worked got a call one day inviting the pilots to the Kremlin. The pilots went, were treated like royalty, presented with special medals, wined, dined and had a long meeting with Yeltsin who was in no rush to get them out of his office (that would have been impolite). Genuine, effusive gratitude for saving some of their own.

I have worked with a few Russians and find them spontaneous, genuine and decent.

I think the government's attitude to this is an utter disgrace.

Outrageous.

The Russians gave more lives than any country to defeat the Nazis and then had to suffer the indignity of a manufactured 'Cold War' and condemnation as our enemy after helping save our skins.

What, to me, amounts to absolute proof our government is incompetent is the fact that, at a time when we're supposed to be making The Scots feel loved enough (and making the rest of the UK believe the spurious idea "we're all in this together") to vote in favour of keeping the UK together and against independence the government

a) Refuses the Russians permission to award their medal to British seafarers who sailed on these convoys.
b) Patronises and trivialises the demands for the service of these seafarers to be recognised.
c) (The Tories) say they will mint a medal before an election then change their mind afterwards.

This will merely convince more people north of Watford Gap that after Scottish independence, next, it will be time to carve up England (a Nation from The Humber /Mersey to the Scottish border would be bigger than a few EU states)

Whilst a Southern based media is apparently outraged by a Northern celebrity sticking his tongue down the throats of a few young girls these veterans (there are 200 of them still alive). If the veterans are ever given a medal pay close attention to the way the story is phrased by the BBC. There won't be any "lies" but you will be left with the idea that it was probably campaigned for by a member of the Royal family and suitably grateful veterans will be selected for the "vox pops".
