It's one thing for editors to claim libel laws prevented them from printing something damaging about Savile (which is a complete lie of course as all they needed was 2 alleged victims and Max Clifford could have provided them, or they could have investigated themselves) but to pretend they didn't hear rumours is ridiculous.

Why then did they go promoting Savile??

Very good points Hedda and, of course, was JS' mobile phone one of the few the tabloids didn't hack and why? One could argue the tabloids' hacking of celebrities' phones meant they may well have known more about BBC employees and what they got up to than the BBC themselves. Are we to believe the tabloids always investigated and exposed those around whom rumours of inappropriate behaviour circulated or did they keep schtum when it served their interests?
