A police force has apologised after an officer used a Taser on a blind man whose white stick was mistaken for a sword.

Colin Farmer, 61, was stunned by police following reports of a man walking through Chorley with a samurai sword.

Ch Supt Stuart Williams, of Lancashire Police, said the force had "deep regrets" and had "clearly put this man through a traumatic experience".

Mr Farmer was taken to hospital for treatment and later discharged.

"It felt like I was grabbing an electricity pylon," said Mr Farmer, who was walking to meet friends in the pub on Friday when the incident happened.

The case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said the incident was being investigated and the officer's Taser had been withdrawn.

Then cops could claim the 'Brazilian' defence when the nice old man proved to be the kids' favourite grandad certified Non-Perv/DEAD.

Quite extraordinary story about the white stick and the samurai sword; could the rumour be true that police have compulsory lobotomies before graduating?

Once again (as in the Duggan case and many others) the police show that they cannot be trusted with further and greater powers and will ultimately abuse them.

Had these PCs been armed, we would have more than likely be dealing with a death here.

A line has got to be drawn as regards disciplining officers in these cases. What threat was this man to the Police Officers? Did they give him any warning? The whole point of a white stick is so that blind people can at least be noticed in the street - I know that, others know that, why the hell don't the Police know that?
